During the more than two years Bama lived on the Bob Meyers ranch west of Cody, he always found magic in the snow and its softening effect upon whatever it touched. Invented in the 1860s by Texas cattleman Charles Goodnight, the chuck wagon served as home base for cowboys on cattle drives or on roundups. It is seldom used in its native state any more except on a few large ranches, but it remains popular in open-range states of the far West where distances are great and it is impractical for cowboys to return to the comfort of a ranch house every night.
