Raising the Bar
by Michael Blessing

Since the late 1940s, the night sky above Jackson Hole, Wyoming has been graced by the radiant glow of one of the most distinctive constellations of the Western sky: the bucking bronco above downtown’s Cowboy Bar. A gas explosion in the basement during the 1950s and subsequent cost of the repairs prompted the owner to add “Million Dollar” to name of this storied landmark.

Blessing’s contemporary take on the Neon West is creating a stir with collectors, and Raising the Bar is no exception. For decades, the facades and businesses on Main Street in the small towns that punctuated those endless miles of open space were lit by ionized gases in bent tubes of glass. These names, shapes and glowing forms have burnt themselves into our collective memory of the modern West’s landscape.

Blessing’s Raising the Bar captured the highest bid at the 2015 C.M. Russell Museum First Strike Auction, selling for nearly eight times its estimated price. This Fine Art Limited Edition Canvas, created to The Greenwich Workshop’s exacting standards, captures all the Pop Art brilliance of the original. The owner of this work will enjoy the quality experience of owning a fine work of contemporary Western art for years to come.

About Michael Blessing

Michael Blessing spent his formative years in rural Montana, surrounded by the land, the people, and the usual conglomeration of machinery.  After pursuing a Master's degree in Music Arts, he spent the next thirty years owning and running two recording studios and working in the music industry in the areas of performance, engineering, and recording.

A self taught artist working in oil, Michael is primarily compelled by the shapes within a composition. Having discovered an initial inclination toward figurative painting, he favors a candid view of his subjects, often depicting unexpected everyday moments and emotions that are universally relevant.  As a rule, Michael is drawn to strong compositions, vibrant color, and bold lines.  His figurative work and paintings of vintage Western nostalgia are widely appealing and have an edgy quality that is both contemporary and timeless.
