in a simple setting of tranquility which belied the very nature of their responsibilities as providers and protectors of their women, children and old people,” says artist Howard Terpning of Protectors of the Cheyenne People.“Even though it is said that they never numbered more than 3,500 people, the Cheyenne had strict social rules and strong warrior societies that made them a force to be reckoned with.”

The Best of the West
The popularity of Western art has skyrocketed over the past several years. A recent Wall Street Journal article titled “Lovers of Western Art Stampede to Reno” tells of knowledgeable collectors from Maine to Hawaii who are spending millions of dollars on important works by celebrated painters of the Old West. One of the highlights of the Western Art collector’s year is the annual Coeur d’Alene Art Auction, which makes Reno home to the nation’s biggest and most successful auction of Western art. “You have no idea how much wealth is in this room,” said one dealer, noting that for many in the crowd, the second or third house is a ranch in Montana waiting to be filled with paintings that reflect the history and the landscape of the West.The 2004 auction sold 99.3% of the paintings, for a total of $18 million—a record until 2005, when the same event garnered $21.2 million.

The annual Cowboy Artists of America (CAA) Sale is one of the country’s premier Western American
art events. A ticketed event, which attracts hundreds of collectors from around the world, it is the only time of year when the entire active CAA membership exhibits together; sales figures run well into seven figures.
