Artist
William S. Phillips Chosen as Artist in Residence at the
Grand Canyon
Artist
William S. Phillips may be best known for his aviation
and nostalgia art, but he is such an accomplished landscape
artist that he has recently been selected by the U.S.
Park Service as the first Artist in Residence at the North
Rim of the Grand Canyon. Renowned artists from around
the United States competed for this honor, and the final
selection was based on examples of artwork and a mission
statement. His paintings of the Grand Canyon convey both
the grandeur and vastness of its majestic landscape.
I was nine years old when my father sent me a postcard
from the Grand Canyon, says Phillips. From
that time on, I have been fascinated by its grandeur and
ever-changing moods. I have seen the Grand Canyon from
numerous vantage points through rumbling summer
thunderstorms and howling winter blizzards, from the sky
above and along its myriad of trails to the river below.
It is always an awesome and humbling experienceone
that must be preserved for future generations. I am greatly
honored to have the opportunity to participate in the
Artist in Residence Program. Working at the Canyon is
a dream come true; born out of that postcard so many years
ago.
During his residence at the Grand Canyon (Sept. 19 to
Oct. 9, 2004), Phillips goal is to interpret the
parks purpose as a place of pleasure, and importance
as a national treasure. |
