Mountain Gorillas
1988
oil, 31 3⁄4" x 35 1⁄2"
Only a few hundred mountain gorillas are left in the wild as poachers have greatly reduced their numbers. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to observe and sketch gorillas in the forests of northern Rwanda. On the far right in this painting is a silver-backed male; with him are two adult females. These three each have distinct personalities that I’ve tried to catch in their facial expressions.
