Wildebeest Migration
1984
oil, 36" x 120"

This ten-foot canvas is barely large enough to capture the vastness of the wildebeest migration. It illustrates some 20,000 animals on the march—a small advance party of the migration that can number over one million. The painting is set in the African bush fifty miles north of the Tanzanian border. It is the dry season. Rains on the Serengeti ceased months ago. The wildebeest migrate about 1,000 miles a year in search of precious water and better grazing. Intermingled with the vast wildebeest herd are giraffe, zebra, waterbuck, gazelle, impala, warthog and topi. Lions watch lazily from the shade, hyenas lope through the scrub, vultures glide through the distant haze and weaver birds fly in and out of their hanging nests.
