A P-38 piloted by Captain Jack Ilfrey gives escort to a straggling B-17 as they depart enemy territory and wing homeward. Crippled bombers were often easy targets for German fighters and the sight of a couple of fighter escorts was indeed a blessing.

Capt. Ilfrey flew 142 combats missions, he was a member of the 94th Fighter Squadron, holds the Air Medal with twelve oak leaf clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross with silver oak leaf clusters, the Silver Star, Europe and African Theatre ribbons and six Bronze stars.
