The Kodiak bear is a subspecies of the brown or grizzly bear. Brown bears migrated to the Kodiak Archipelago from mainland Alaska about 12,000 years ago. As the climate warmed at the end of the last ice age, the sea level rose and the bears became an isolated population. They live exclusively on the islands of the Kodiak Archipelago.

Kodiak bears are the largest bears in the world. While they may grow to over 1,000 pounds, the average adult male weighs between 600-900 lbs; females generally weigh about 30 percent less. Although Kodiak bears are often touted as the world’s largest carnivore, they are actually omnivores. Although fish is an important part of their diet, they eat more grass, plants and berries than meat and rarely expend the time or effort necessary to chase and kill animals.

This mother is showing her young how to fish so as they grow older, they will be self-reliant. The cubs are observing the seagulls and wondering if they are friend or foe.

Mort Solberg
Solberg adds, "To paint what you see is one thing but to feel what you see and to be able to paint that impression is something else again." The artist has created a distinctive, timeless style by contrasting loose and flowing forms with sharp edges and tight definition. His interest in art began early and he pursued it through the years at the West Technical High School and the Cleveland Institute of Art. Following graduation, Solberg entered the world of commercial art, first working at an art studio, then for American Greetings. He was content to work successfully in that field until a job as art director for another card copy brought him west. There he was inspired to explore photography, eventually returning to painting with a new point of view and a vital new approach. The result has been art that has been lauded across the continent. His paintings are in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art and the American Bicentennial Gallery, among others. His honors include a purchase award from the National Watercolor Society’s top award, and an award of merit from the Society of Animal Artists. Solberg is a member of the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society. The result is also art that has been lauded across the continent. His paintings are in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art and the American Bicentennial Gallery, among others.
