The young Tawny Owl shown grasping lichen-covered branch of a tree is rarely seen during the daytime and then only when the weather is heavily overcast. One of a small group of strictly nocturnal birds, its disc-shaped face, black eyes and heavily feathered wings are perfectly adapted for hunting deep in the woods at night. The Twany is most commonly found in the Black Forest of Germany but ranges all the way from the British Isles to China. Black eyes are rare among owls, most species have yellow, orange or brown eyes.
