Michael Mao grew up in Shanghai, China, where he began teaching himself
drawing and painting at the age of seven. As a young man he pursued
architecture, first studying and then teaching at Tongji University, one of
the most prestigious architectural schools in China. In 1992, Mao moved to the
United States to study architecture at the University of Texas at Arlington;
however, while in Texas he became fascinated by computer graphics and
animation. He quit his job as an architect to study animation and computer art
and shortly after found a job working on the Oscar-winning film Shrek at
DreamWorks™ Studios, where he is currently employed as a digital artist. Mao’s
paintings display an artistic mastery of color, lighting and vision. His
paintings cover a wide range of subject matter and have been exhibited in many
national and international juried exhibitions and won many awards. He is
currently a member of the Oil Painters of America and the California Art Club.
