This large, Prix de West award-winning painting was inspired by the sight of pack mules crossing a river. When Howard saw the immense mud cliff and its broad stretching shadows he was so taken by the vista that this exact painting began to form in his imagination. The mountains in the distance, the trees and the color of the rich earth with those dark shapes were all his for the taking. Howard unified the landscape with Natives moving along the edge of the water.

The seemingly natural and random fallen dead trees on the painting’s middle right are not arbitrary, but rather intelligent design. Just as important is that small spot of light in the upper left shadow area, almost like a watchful eye. The lower rocks are a tribute to Howard’s passionate approach to all areas of a painting. Every rock is painted boldly, with its own individual touches. Each is joined together naturally, like a flowing soliloquy.
