| Howard sensed that this painting would be more dramatic in a vertical format. Originally there were more weeds and flowers at the bottom but they were eventually simplified so the eye could flow up more easily to the activity under the tree. The shaded setting allowed the dappled effect of the sunlight dipping in. The pots, bunders and bags are visually tied to the three individuals, effectively going out of the left edge. This is balanced by the tree branch on the top right. The back of the shield is interesting in these details; low key yet still the center of interest and we are ouside imagining what the men see. The war shield was pwerful medicine. Note the small touches of various blues. |
