This Crow warrior's face and body are painted yellow to reflect life. To Native Americans, the color yellow represented the sun and the sun meant life. The sun made the grass and trees grow and it warmed the body and the earth.

"Once I had settled on the subject for this painting, it was a matter of balancing the human and animal figures and juxtaposing them with the yellow of the flowers and the somewhat interpretive greens and browns of the foreground and background."
