This small painting was undoubtedly part of a devotional altar piece. They were owned by individuals and were easily transportable. Often these were diptychs or triptychs that folded to protect the paintings while traveling. Sometimes the paintings contained portraits of the owners or favorite saints and could be set up and used as small altars for personal prayers and devotions.
