Indian Boy at Crow Fair
James Bama

Crow Fair, held every summer, comprises the largest annual gathering of North American Indians. It lasts for five days and is attended by some ten thousand Indians who set up a thousand tepees. There are parades, rodeo events and horseracing. Drumming and dancing continue far into the early morning hours.

This boy was one of four Arapaho brothers from the Wind River reservation who danced at the fair. His distinctive costume and face paint represent his personal creativity and individual style.

Red, White and Blue
Alan Bean

"The space program represents what is truly great with America," says artist Alan Bean. "When I was an astronaut I felt each day that I had accepted a responsibility to do the right thing professionally in everything that I did. I was not alone in this as I saw this 'right stuff' code everywhere. It was a good feeling to know that all those around me were dedicated to making our nation's space exploration effort as good as it could possibly be. This red, white and blue feeling and theme carried over into everything we did. If everyone at NASA cut ourselves I believe we would all bleed red, white and blue."

Witch of the Wave
Christopher Blossom

The discovery of gold in California in 1848 had a dramatic impact on this country and the rest of the world. In the shipping industry, for example, speed and capacity became even more important for shipping goods to the booming city of San Francisco. It was during this time, at the height of the clipper ship era, that George Raynes built the Witch of the Wave at Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Built primarily for Far East trade, a typical voyage took her from the East Coast to California, and then around the world. Although she was a clipper ship, Witch of the Wave was not designed for extreme speed, but rather to accommodate a large amount of cargo. After her fourth voyage in 1854, she was chartered by and later sold to Dutch interests, who renamed her Electra.
"I like to find a way to show a ship in a slightly different way than the typical full-sail, sunny day picture," says Chris Blossom, "and here I show her under shortened sail in fairly blustery conditions, as the sun begins to set."

Wet Way, Washington's Choice
John Buxton

In 1755, George Washington acted as an aide de camp to British General Edward Braddock as the British attempted to retake the Ohio Country from the French. Although the expedition itself ended in disaster for the British and colonial forces, the campaign provided an opportunity for the young Washington to distinguish himself in battle. Three years later, when Scottish general John Forbes began to plan his own campaign to take Fort Duquesne, he called upon Washington for assistance. Washington suggested they attack via a southerly route, but Forbes insisted on developing a new passage inland instead. Fortunately, Forbes had made the right decision and successfully eradicated the French. Washington's Scout depicts an officer and two of his men investigating a possible route for what would become Forbes' road.

Resistance Training
James C. Christensen

Although the relationship between the quartet of tough-looking fish and the determined cyclist in Resistance Training may at first be unclear, the title offers some explanation: athletes often train against a resisting force to build their strength. In this particular case, however, as the fish tug stubbornly in the other direction, we must wonder-who is training whom?

Wait'n fer Them to Mother-Up,
... and Bed Down

Bob Coronato

“Today, just as in the past, after calves are branded, they’re taken to a summer pasture. The cows and their calves become separated in the drive and anyone who has moved large numbers of cows knows that one thing is for sure—it’s loud. One by one the cows quiet down and mother-up, wandering off in pairs.

After a long day of moving cows, you can feel your body starting to creak. As the day begins to cool off, you and your horse just sit there. This was always an introspective time for me, sitting on my horse, waiting. You have time to look around and think. As the cows pair up it gets quieter and quieter, until there is just silence.”

Every autumn, Don Demers and a group of his friends (including artist Chris Blossom) meet in East Boothbay, Maine, to enjoy the tranquility of the coastal town. "The clean and low light is distinct from summer light," says Demers. "It's great for painting." Standing on the banks of an offshoot of the Damariscotta River, the artist painted this tranquil New England scene.

Silk Snapper
Flick Ford

"Being new to snapper and reef fish in general, I thought I had found a red snapper to paint when this large silk snapper was landed," said the artist. "The guide and owner of Fat Fish Adventures (and the most skilled hand-liner I know), Peter Jervis, called it a 'red silky.' The confusion was mine. The bright yellow eyes distinguish the silk snapper from the red-eyed red snapper. There is a lot of deceptive nomenclature surrounding red snappers. A study by the University of North Carolina found that seventy out of twenty-two fish sold as red snapper were actually some other kind of fish."

Stayin' Alive
Judy Larson

"Survival of the close-knit pack is usually the most important item on the wolf agenda," says artist Judy Larson, "but for Alaskan wolves, just staying alive has become a full time job. State-sanctioned aerial gunning has taken the lives of more than 600 wolves, and hunting by snowmobiles has increased. In Idaho and Wyoming, state officials are determined to annihilate wolves that wander outside of national parks. Wolves are fighting to stay alive. Only we can help them."

The Terrible Twos
Bonnie Marris

“I did all the right things! I picked a fabulous stallion with a great disposition to be her sire and I read all the books. In May, we delivered a beautiful little filly. I worked with her every day, teaching her leading, bathing, grooming, tying and not to kick or nip. She was the perfect foal…. Then, one morning, I woke up to the “terrible twos.” Suddenly she argued! She threw tantrums! She bucked, she ran, she whinnied for me to leave, then not to leave. She threw her brushes, dumped her grain, splashed water on me, stomped her feet, and shook her head. Was it my fault? Not enough teaching? Too much?

“She’s three now. Whew…she’s perfect again!”

Guardians of the Waters
Frank C. McCarthy

The desert lands of the southwestern United States contain a multitude of mysteries and artifacts of earlier peoples. The images carved into the rock face in Guardians of the Waters did, at one time, have specific meaning, but experts today do not agree on their precise translation. McCarthy's dynamic portrait of a band of warriors racing past a group of symbols illustrates the grand scale and intriguing style of some of these petroglyphs. Perhaps these warriors know their true meaning.

Birdcage
Emily McPhie

Emily McPhie's portraits of women and children offer a window into her artistic education. The solemn, sweet little girl in Birdcage, for example, would look perfectly at home with a collection of early American paintings. "Birds often represent the soul or spirit in my paintings," says the artist. The birdcage itself is empty, but if we look closely we can find the bird printed on the little girl's dress-has her soul broken free just as the bird? Birdcage invites us to look deeper into our own hearts and imaginations to find the answer.

Dawn of the Liberators
William S. Phillips

Dawn of the Liberators was created as a tribute to the aviators whose bravery contributed to the Allied victory in World War II. The painting was commissioned as a memorial to artist Howard Terpning's brother, First Lieutenant John E. Terpning, who paid the ultimate price to secure American freedom. First Lieutenant Terpning was a pilot in the crew of B-24D Bomber 42-20525, which was lost over New Guinea on May 7, 1944.

As they fly into formation on the way to their targets, two B-24s of the 43rd Bomb Group's 64th Squadron climb into a Pacific dawn. Although they were historically eclipsed in number by their European counterparts, the B-24 Squadrons of the Asiatic-Pacific theater fought a relentless and determined enemy in an unforgiving environment to ensure safety for the Allied nations.

Wa Girl
Mian Situ

The Yunnan Province of southwest China is a mountainous and remote region that is home to 26 separate tribes including the Wa. The isolation of the province has protected the Wa from the incursion of modern influences that have overcome so much of China. Many of the tribal traditions and ways have survived to this day.
Most of artist Mian Situ's depictions of rural life in China focus on this region, and while it may be an unfamiliar world with unfamiliar customs, the emotions and dreams of the people in his paintings are universal

Mountain Sentinel
Daniel Smith

Humans have long been fascinated by the mystery of the raven. Throughout Europe, Asia and North America, early peoples told stories of raven gods and their deeds. This raven sits alone on a gnarled branch, staring vigilantly into the mountain mist. His eyes scan the sky, watching for predator, prey or anything in between. Like all of Daniel Smith's realistic wildlife scenes, Mountain Sentinel places the viewer instantly in the wilderness habitat of his subject.

Sign Along the Trail
Howard Terpning

The Native Americans had a multitude of ways to communicate with other members of their tribes. The Cherokee would bend a small sapling nearly to the ground, using the now-crooked tree to indicate a direction. Some of these crooked trees can still be seen today. Other trail-marking methods included piling stones or branches to create what are known today as cairns. If a trail was devoid of natural debris, a traveler might leave a personal item along the trail to attract attention and direct those who would follow. The horseman in this scene has found the marker left by his predecessor, confirming that he is on the right track.
