An "unbound book of art" -- a work of art unto itself.

A Light in the Wilderness is being published in the tradition of the great French art books, known from the Fifteenth Century by various names: la edition de luxe, le livre de luxe, le livre des artistes and le livre de peintre. It is this last that is perhaps the most fitting, for it translates as the book of the painter.

To the connoisseur, the livre de luxe was not a book, but a valuable work of art unto itself. In it the artist did far more than create decorative illustration. Indeed, the concept reversed the traditional role of writer and artist. It was the painter making the statement. In later editions, type was composed to intertwine with the art.

Most often, these books were left unbound. This idea has been implemented in A Light in the Wilderness.
