Cascade of Light, Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe

by June Carey

"I loved the challenge of creating something so large and powerful. Just taking the photographs to use while painting was quite an adventure! I made three trips to photograph the area in record-breaking heat last July. I decided that I wanted to paint early morning light on the falls—and I am not a morning person. I got up at five a.m. to catch the light and it was worth it. In order to get the shot, I held my camera strap between my teeth and climbed out over the boulders of Eagle Falls. I held the camera at arms' length and hoped for the best. Just getting to paint this scene was a journey, but the pleasure it brings to everyone (including myself) makes it more than worth it."

To Surf the Sunset

by Rod Frederick

"Bald eagles, our national symbol, have come back dramatically from near extinction over the last fifty years. They're a very common sight where I live in the Cascade Mountains in Oregon. I never get tired of looking at bald eagles, nor do I ever tire of the sunsets we get here, looking toward the West and the Cascades. This horizon in particular lends itself to a longer image, one where you can look in every direction and see something. I wanted to show the eagles as they flew across the skyline, using the last fading rays of sunlight to find a place to roost for the night. They'e surfing the sunset, riding those last thermals before they go to bed."

To Dance Before the Sea and Sky
by Steve Hanks

"I believe that art can be more than just pretty pictures. Art should bring comfort to people. It should be by our side when we go through good times and hard times," says Steve Hanks. "Art should elicit a thought-provoking examination of one's own life and place in the world."

"We all experience pain, but there are great moments of pleasure all around us too. These moments may often be fleeting and get by us before we are able to fully comprehend their beauty and importance. I have tried to capture a few of these moments in paintings that can be savored for years to come."

The beauty of this joyful moment is infectious. Steve Hanks has succeeded in capturing that perfect, uplifting energy in To Dance Before the Sea and Sky.

Contemplating the Dragonfly

by Bonnie Marris

"This red fox is a favorite subject of mine," says Bonnie Marris. "I have painted him and his progeny on the creek behind my studio for many years. The fox's physical brilliance is matched only by the brilliance of his mind. He remains alert and analytical of his surroundings at all times. At this moment he sits, captivated by a dragonfly. Perhaps this is a moment of mutual enchantment."

The original Contemplating the Dragonfly sold for $27,500 at the Coeur d'Alene art auction on July 28 in Reno, Nevada. A limited edition canvas from The Greenwich Workshop is an affordable way to take home this award-winning and highly sought-after art.

Roar of the Falls
by Frank C. McCarthy

"I had a good time doing this painting," said Frank McCarthy. "It's a combination of many forms of Western action. There's the galloping of the horses, but also the rushing of the water and even the movement of the clouds above."

Frank McCarthy was often called ";the master of Western action" and The Roar of the Falls is evidence of his claim to that title. The painting showcases his artistic strengths in a thrilling image of Sioux warriors surging across Wyoming’s Yellowstone Territory. The dramatic action of the figures is emphasized by the careful setting of shadow and light. The Roar of the Falls is one of McCarthy’s best work and a testimony to the skill of a great artist.

The Shaman and His Magic Feathers
by Howard Terpning

The title of shaman was given to a person within a tribe who had powers beyond the limits of human understanding. The shamans were remarkable not only for their extraordinary powers, but for their ability to control them. The native people of the American plains accepted these powers as proof of supernatural blessing, both of the shaman and of their tribes.

It was not uncommon for a shaman to give a public demonstration to inspire wonder and awe in his audience. In The Shaman and His Magic Feathers, a shaman has invited a small group of his tribesmen to witness his magical abilities. Away from the camp, the shaman has built a small fire and blessed it with sage and juniper. Before the approaching storm arrives, he will use his powers to float the feathers in the air above the flames, where they will hang for as long as he wishes. Like a modern-day shaman, Howard Terpning uses his artistic powers to create a scene electric with awe and excitement. The original of this beautiful painting recently sold for over $1.3 million at the Autry Center's Masters of the American West Fine Art Exhibition and Sale.
