Rothschild Giraffe, Nakuru Park

With only several hundred animals remaining, the Rothschild Giraffe, also known as the Baringo or Ugandan Giraffe, is the second-most endangered giraffe subspecies on earth. Only a handful locations on earth can boast a Rothschild Giraffe population, including Lake Nakuru National Park in Kenya, where artist Guy Combes makes his home.

Combes’ father, artist Simon Combes, was instrumental in Lake Nakuru National Park for Rhino Rescue, which was responsible for fencing off the park to protect a newly introduced population of white and black rhinoceros.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Guy has been a part of committee action and has helped his stepmother, Kat, to continue this very important work. The results of Guy’s impressive efforts in the worlds of conservation and wildlife art will be featured in the Artists for Conservation Foundation’s first annual juried exhibition this coming September. The exhibition will be held at the Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum, where Guy is currently Artist in Residence.

“It’s not the Old West of the 1890s but Crook County, Wyoming in the early 1990s,” says artist Bob Coronato. “The people and the ways of this area are very much the same as they always were. I was drawn to the area because it’s the closest you can get to seeing the frontier the way it was. The big towns are hundreds of miles apart and the little towns are the glue that holds the frontier together. Brandings here are still a community effort and the ranchers still work the same way they did a hundred years ago.

“The ranches these days are disappearing. It is sad, but as the ranches disappear, the cowboys also disappear one by one.As the land gets developed the cowboy lifestyle fades fast. The Coming of the Iron Horse

Of all the innovations of the nineteenth century, none changed the landscape of the American West more than the steam locomotive .A monument to speed, industry and westward expansion, the locomotive charged across the landscape, changing the face of frontier life forever, but it did not happen overnight.

Past and present collided in the prairies and plains, as workers laying tracks for the trains met with resistance from local wildlife. Even the mighty locomotive engine itself, with all its power and might, occasionally ran into the unstoppable force of nature.

“Huge migrating herds of buffalo could stall a train for hours,” said Frank McCarthy. “For sport, travelers sometimes took potshots at them from the cars while they waited for the procession to pass.” It would not be long before progress and professional hide hunters rendered the threat of buffalo on train tracks nearly extinct.
