Sonoma Surf

by June Carey

“When one has lived a long time in northern California, as I have,” says June Carey, “it is easy to forget or take for granted the exquisite beauty of the California coastline. I had driven to Sonoma to photograph something entirely different, but as I made my way home, driving along the shore, I was astounded by the light on the water and the rough beauty of the rocks. Soon the sun would set and the first pale pink rays were creeping across the sparkling water. It was absolutely magnificent. I wanted to take that image home with me, to hold it in my mind and with this painting I think I have succeeded.”

Collector's Edition

A very few people will own one of only 150 Men and Angels Collector’s Editions. This autographed book comes slipcased in rich burgundy bookcloth with a gold-stamped, leather label, lined in acid-free paper and is accompanied by Little Wings, an original stone lithograph created by artist James C. Christensen especially for the Men and Angels Collectors Edition.
The title page of each volume is signed by the artist and is consecutively numbered to match the stone litho. The discerning collector will treasure the book and lithograph package from this extremely limited edition.

Little Wings
Each of heaven’s angels has her own unique set of wings. Some are grand and gleam in the sunlight reflected off the clouds; some are sleek and graceful; some are a riot of peacock colors. This little angel, new to her own heavenly gifts, seems a bit impatient with the speed of their growth. When will she be able to fly like the others, dancing in the light of heaven?
This original stone lithograph was drawn by James C. Christensen, and produced by his long-time collaborator, Master Printer Wayne Kimball. The softly curling lines of Christensen’s impatient angel spring to life with Kimball’s exquisite lithography.

Slow Bull

by Judy Larson®

Slow Bull was a respected Oglala Sioux subchief who joined his first war party at the age of fourteen. At the age of seventeen he captured one hundred and seventy horses from the Apsaroke. That same year he received medicine from buffalo in a dream as he slept on a hilltop—not fasting or meditating, but resting from hard travel on the warpath. Over the course of his storied lifetime he engaged in fifty-five battles with rival tribes and his distinctive features can be seen in the shoulder of Judy Larson’s bull buffalo.
“I personally ‘met’ this bull buffalo in the middle of a thunderstorm, roaming wild with three hundred other buffalo on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation in Montana. Some of the oldest buffalo were nearing thirty-five years of age and most of the old bulls stayed by themselves, but this seasoned veteran had come to join the herd as rutting season began. He was massive and awesome.”

Christmas Traditions at Watchman Hill Inn

by William S. Phillips

Against a golden sunset, a Sikorsky VS-44 approaches the harbor at Phillips Bay. As the brisk night air descends on this first night of December, Santa Claus arrives at the Watchman Hill Inn, heralded by two men in Revolutionary War dress and the traditional firing of the cannon. During the Revolutionary War, a citizens’ militia kept watch over the Outer Bay from the hill. If they spied British ships on the horizon, the cannon’s voice would alert the townsfolk to prepare a defense. These days, the sounding of the cannon is a cause for merriment. The holiday season in Phillips Bay is filled with the traditional joys of colored lights, caroling, feasting and church services, accompanied by a fresh blanket of snow.

Reflections

by William S. Phillips

“I was nine years old when my father sent me a postcard from the Grand Canyon,” says Phillips. “From that time on, I have been fascinated by its grandeur and ever-changing moods. I have seen the Grand Canyon from numerous vantage points— through rumbling summer thunderstorms and howling winter blizzards, from the sky above and along its myriad of trails to the river below. It is always an awesome and humbling experience and one that must be preserved for future generations.” During his time as an Artist in Residence at the Grand Canyon in 2004, Phillips worked hard to interpret the park’s purpose as a place of pleasure and its importance as a national treasure. His magnificent works from that period, including Reflections, testify to the majesty of the American landscape.

Winter's Embrace

by Daniel Smith

In the mid-1990s, when wolves (which had been eradicated from the park) were reintroduced to Yellowstone, Daniel Smith worked with the Yellowstone Wolf Recovery Project, hiking through the park to observe the habits and environmental impact of the newly introduced wolves. Since then, wolves have become one of his favorite subjects and he paints them in all seasons.

“Living in the mountains of Montana has provided me with ample time to experience snow,” says Smith. “Fresh snow creates wonderful textures and a quiet serenity that is always inspiring. Wolf reintroduction in the West has rekindled my interest in this extraordinary predator.

“My paintings are a reflection of many years of field work and my passion for the natural world. My objective is to share my passion through a scientifically accurate, realistic painting while maintaining artistic integrity.”

The Horse Doctor and His Medicine Bag at Rendezvous

by Howard Terpning®

“Once the Plains people had become accustomed to owning horses,” says Howard Terpning, “a special class of medicine men emerged: those with unusual skill in healing the ailments of horses. Some remedies involved the use of various herbs and others would seem to us today like magic tricks, with no sound medical reasoning, and yet they often worked wonders. The Nez Perce were among the best horse breeders, so it would follow that they produced excellent horse doctors.
“This scene at Rendezvous shows a group of Nez Perce and a white trader observing the initial meeting between a horse doctor and his patient. At some point in the healing process, the horse doctor will open his medicine bag and bring out the magical items and herbs that will, with luck, cure the animal.
“This painting enabled me to show a large group of people, surrounded by the clutter and confusion of the annual rendezvous.”
